Rounds and pairing
How a director builds, checks, releases and runs a round on the Rounds screen: draws, sides, byes, judges, rooms, the release check and every message it can return.
Rounds is the screen where a round is drawn, staffed, checked, released to competitors and judges, and started. It is the fourth item in the left rail of the admin area, after Overview, Setup and Field, at /tournaments/{id}/admin/rounds. Use it for every round of every event: the preliminary rounds that everyone debates, and the elimination rounds that follow the break. Ballots for a round are worked on Ballots, and the values that shape a draw are described in Setup.
Before the first round exists, the screen shows a short heading and a Next round panel that prepares Round 1. After a round exists, the screen becomes a console with a round list on the left, a seven step workflow strip across the top, a table of rooms in the middle, an inspector for one room on the right, and a release bar along the bottom. The address takes ?round_id= to open a particular round and ?pairing= to open a particular room, which is how the links in the release bar work.
A round is a set of rooms. A room, also called a pairing, seats two entries, the affirmative side and the negative side, with one judge or a panel of judges. A bye is a round in which an entry is not paired and receives a win. A panel is an odd number of judges who decide one room by majority. A release publishes the round's rooms to competitors, judges and the public page.
Who can use it
| Role | What it can do on Rounds |
|---|---|
| Platform admin | Everything on this screen, for any tournament. |
| Organization owner or admin | Everything on this screen, for every tournament the organization hosts. |
| Tournament admin seat | Everything on this screen. |
| Tab seat | Everything on this screen. A tab seat prepares, pairs, seats judges, releases, un-releases, starts rounds, shifts the schedule and works requests exactly as an admin seat does. |
| Compliance seat | Cannot open Rounds. A compliance seat is read only and reaches Records and Compliance only, and every write on this screen refuses it. |
| Settings only organization role | Cannot open Rounds. |
| Coach, competitor, judge, observer | Cannot open Rounds. They see the result of the work here on their own pages: a competitor sees the room, a judge sees the ballot, an observer sees rooms they were approved for. |
Every action on the screen checks admin access again on the server. A visit by an account without a seat ends in You do not have admin access to this tournament. A check that could not run ends in Could not check your admin access. Try again. The first means the account lacks a seat. The second says nothing about the account, and a second attempt is the right response.
How a round moves
The console reads each round through four phases. The phase is worked out from the rooms, and no director sets it by hand.
| Phase | What it means | How a round gets there |
|---|---|---|
| Upcoming | The round exists, and no room is released or started. | Prepare or Generate pairings creates it. The left column marks a round with no rooms as Draft. |
| Released | At least one room is public. | Release round or Release bracket, or the automatic release when Setup has it on. |
| Live | The round was started, or at least one ballot is in. | Start round, or the first submitted ballot. |
| Complete | Every room that needs a ballot has a decision, and byes count as decided. A round whose status is closed also reads as complete. | The last ballot is submitted or entered. There is no separate close step. |
A round cannot be created until the previous round of the same event is paired and has every ballot in. The screen says which round it is waiting on and how many ballots are out. The workflow strip lights one step at a time, chosen from the state of the rooms, and steps before it show a check mark.
The Rounds item in the left rail shows a count of rounds, and the Ballots item shows how many ballots are out.
The header
| Control | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Rounds | The page heading. | Fixed. |
| Live pill | Reads Live, the round name and, when the round has an end time, the word ends and the clock time in the tournament's zone. Shown for the round that is started, or that has a ballot in and ballots still out. | Absent when no round is live. |
| Summary line | Names the event and the open round, then how many rooms are released out of the rooms that need a ballot, then how many ballots are in out of how many are expected. | Reads no pairings yet for an empty round. |
| Print postings | Opens the printable posting sheet for the open round. | None. |
| Public page | Opens the tournament's public page. | None. |
| Status banner | A line under the header after an action succeeds, for example Generated 12 pairings. or Applied 3 fixes. | Disappears on the next load. |
| Error banner | A line under the header with the message an action returned. See Troubleshooting. | Disappears on the next load. |
The round list in the left column
Below the large breakpoint the column is replaced by a Select round drop down above the rooms. It lists the rounds of the open event, then the newest round of each other event, and offers Prepare Round 1 for an event with no rounds.
| Control | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary group | Lists the event's preliminary rounds and a sentence about the draw. The sentence reads Everyone debates. followed by the draw Setup chose and the words one judge a room, results seed the break. | The sentence is fixed text. The number of judges in a room is set in Setup. |
| Round row | Opens that round. Shows the round name, its time window in the tournament's zone or Not scheduled, and a count. | The count reads Draft with no rooms, then N blocked, then rooms released over total as N/M out, then ballots in over expected as N/M ballots, then Done. |
| Round dot | A hollow dot for a round with no rooms, red when the check holds the round, amber while rooms are unreleased or ballots are out, and the accent colour when the round is done. | None. |
| Add Round N | Opens the Next round panel to prepare the next preliminary round. | Greyed and not clickable until every existing preliminary round is paired with every ballot in. Absent once as many preliminary rounds exist as Setup plans. |
| Elimination group | Lists the event's elimination rounds. Each row reads Break to N and the panel size, for example panels of 3. The sentence above the rows is fixed text about a top seed meeting the bottom seed and panels of three. | The panel size on each row comes from Setup. The fixed sentence does not follow it. |
| Add an elimination round | Opens the Next round panel to approve the break and prepare the first bracket. | Greyed until every preliminary round exists and is complete, no elimination round exists, and the break is 2 or more. |
| Add the next bracket | After an elimination round exists, reads Add, the next bracket's name, and after the round's ballots. Opens the elimination view, which is the Break screen described in Breaks and elimination rounds. | Greyed until the last elimination round is paired with every ballot in. |
| Other events group | One row for each other event, showing its newest round and the link Open, or the link Prepare Round 1 when it has no rounds. | Shown only in a tournament with more than one event. |
| Round name with Edit | Opens the round's settings in the inspector. The button reads Close while settings are open. | See Round settings. |
| State list | Rows under the round name: Window, Reveal, Spectate, Judges, and for a preliminary round Pairing, or for an elimination round Break and Advance. | Reveal reads Full or Winner only. Spectate reads Open or Closed. Judges reads N per room. |
| Review ballots | Opens Ballots for the round. | None. |
| Standings | Opens the standings screen. | None. |
| Field · judges | Opens the judge roster on Field. | None. |
The workflow strip
Seven steps run across the top. The step that is lit shows its action buttons. On a narrow screen only the lit step is shown. A preliminary round and an elimination round use different step names and a few different buttons.
| Step | Buttons | What the step does and when it is lit |
|---|---|---|
| Pair, or Break and bracket for elimination | Generate pairings, and Pair by hand. For an elimination round, Break to N and seed, or Seed from the previous round's winners, and Seed by hand. When Setup's draw is By hand, a preliminary round shows Add a pairing alone. While the previous round still has ballots out, the button reads Open ballots. | Draws the round. The step text names the draw: power-paired on record with sides balanced and byes to the lowest seed, drawn at random, the next round of the round robin, pods in rotation, or paired by hand. Lit while the round has no rooms. |
| Judges, or Panels for elimination | Auto-allocate judges and Assign by hand. For elimination, Auto-fill panels and Seat by hand. | Seats judges. Reads N rooms without a judge, or Every room has a judge. Lit while any room has fewer judges than the panel size. |
| Check | Apply all N fixes, Apply the fix when there is one, or No fixes to apply when there are none, and Show blockers. | Runs the release check and offers one recommended fix for each room that has one. Lit while the check holds the round. |
| Release | Release round, or Release bracket for elimination. | Publishes the postings after a confirmation. Lit while any room is unreleased. |
| Start | Start round. | Starts the clock. Enabled only when every room is released, every room has a judge or full panel, and the round has not started. Lit between release and the first ballot. |
| Ballots | Open ballots. | Reads N of M in, and for a preliminary round adds that standings update as ballots land. Lit while the round is live. |
| Next round, or Advance for elimination | Prepare the next round, or Prepare and the next bracket's name. | Reads how many ballots are still out, or that every ballot is in. The button is greyed until every ballot is in. Lit when every ballot is decided. |
Release publishes the postings, so competitors can find their rooms. Start is the clock. The release check already refuses a room with no judge, and Start checks again that every room has one. Starting cannot be taken back.
Controls above the table of rooms
These controls appear once the round has rooms.
| Control | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Search pairings | Filters the table as text is typed. Matches the room, either competitor and any seated judge. The placeholder reads Room, competitor or judge. | Not case sensitive. |
| All | Shows every room, byes included, with the count of all rooms. | Selected by default. |
| Blocked | Shows rooms whose status is Blocked or Panel short. In an elimination round the button reads Panel short / blocked. | The count turns red when it is above zero. |
| Advisories | Shows rooms that carry advice and no blocker. | None. |
| Unreleased | Shows rooms that are not byes and not yet released. | None. |
| Add a pairing | Opens a blank New pairing form in the inspector. | None. |
| Auto-allocate judges | Seats judges in every room that is not released or decided. In an elimination round the button reads Auto-fill panels. | Uses the number of judges a room needs. See Seating judges. |
When the previous preliminary round still has ballots out and the open round already has rooms, a notice above the table reads Cannot generate the next draw, followed by how many ballots still need a decision and how many earlier rounds are not paired.
The table of rooms
| Column or value | What it shows | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Room | The room name. A room with no name shows a red dash. An online room shows Online room and its number in Setup's room list. | A name that starts with a digit is shown as Room followed by the name. |
| Matchup | The affirmative entry, its school, the word vs, then the negative entry and its school. A bye row shows BYE and says it advances on record. | Rooms keep draw order, and byes sort last. |
| Judge | The seated judge, and a clerk when a moot court format seats one. In an elimination round the column is Panel and shows N of M seated, or the chair and the number of other seats. | Reads No judge in red when a room has nobody. |
| Status | One word: Released, Ready, Advisory, Blocked, Panel short, or Bye. Under it, a line that reads Fix and the recommended fix. | See the status table below. |
| Row click | Opens that room in the inspector. Byes cannot be opened. | None. |
| Empty filter | The text No rooms match that filter. | Shown when a filter or search hides every room. |
| Room status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Released | The room is public. |
| Ready | The room is unreleased and has no finding. |
| Advisory | The room is unreleased and has at least one warning, and no blocker. |
| Blocked | The room has at least one blocking finding. |
| Panel short | An elimination room has fewer judges seated than the panel needs. |
| Bye | The room is a bye. It has no judge, room or ballot. |
| Incomplete | Shown only on the New pairing form, until both competitors are chosen. |
When a round has no rooms, the table is replaced by a heading reading the round name and has no pairings yet. For a round that cannot be created yet, the text names the round it waits on and offers Open ballots for that round and Go to the previous round. For a round that can be drawn, the text and buttons match the Pair step.
Draw types and sides
Setup, under Rounds and break, chooses one draw for the preliminary rounds. Elimination rounds are always seeded from standings. Generate pairings uses the chosen draw and refuses to run when the round already has rooms.
| Draw | What it does |
|---|---|
| Power-paired | Groups entries into brackets by wins, orders each bracket by speaker points, and matches the top of a bracket against the bottom. An odd bracket pulls up a team from the next bracket. Round 1 is drawn at random within the field. A rematch and a pairing of two entries from one school are penalized, and a rematch carries the larger penalty. |
| Random draw | Pairs entries at random whatever their records. |
| Round robin | Each round is the next round of a schedule in which every entry meets every other entry once before any entry meets another twice. |
| Pods | Splits the field into pods. Pods meet in rotation, so every pod faces every other before any repeats. Inside a pair of pods, the strongest entry meets the strongest entry of the other pod. An entry with no pod blocks the draw by default. |
| By hand | Nothing is generated. The round opens empty on the New pairing form and the director adds each room. |
| Sides setting | How the draw gives sides |
|---|---|
| Balanced | The entry whose affirmative count is lower than its negative count takes the affirmative side. When both entries stand equal, a coin flip decides. |
| Random | A coin flip decides every room. |
Elimination rounds seed the best entry against the last seed, the second best against the second last, and so on. The first elimination round is seeded from the break. A later round is seeded from the winners of the previous elimination round, re-seeded by preliminary standing. Seeding refuses to run while any room of the previous round has no decision.
Byes
A draw with an odd number of entries leaves one entry without an opponent. That entry is given a bye room, which has no judge, no room name and no ballot. In the power-paired draw the bye goes to the lowest ranked entry in the lowest bracket. A bye counts as a win in the entry's record and is also counted as a bye. A bye room is stored with the same entry on both sides and the status bye, and the release check treats that shape as expected.
A bye room cannot be opened in the inspector and cannot be given a judge. A pairing created by hand cannot be a bye, because the form refuses an entry on both sides.
Seating judges
A room needs one judge in a preliminary round, and as many as Setup sets for an elimination bracket. The default for an elimination bracket is three. Panel sizes are odd so that a majority exists.
- Auto-allocate judges. Reads the round's rooms, skips rooms that are released or decided, and seats judges in the rest. It replaces the judges it seated earlier in those rooms, so pressing it twice leaves one panel and not two. The number of judges a room needs is sent with the button and is limited to 1 through 9.
- What the allocator weighs. A judge's available dates, the judge's own daily limit of rounds, declared school conflicts, declared entry conflicts, household ties and the judge's own school. A repeat of a team the judge has seen costs more, and becomes a hard refusal when Setup's Never seat a judge with a team they have judged is on. Setup's balance of judge categories and accepted judge nominations also move the choice.
- Who is in the pool. Only roster judges who have accepted their place, completed compliance and orientation, and been approved. A judge short of one of those steps is left out, and a failed allocation says how many.
- Moot court. In an event whose format is moot court, the same button also seats clerks, who never receive ballots.
- Assign by hand. The room inspector seats each judge from a searchable list. The first seat is the chair, and the other seats are called Wing.
After a successful allocation the banner reads Seated N judges, and adds across panels of K when the panel is larger than one. Allocation does not choose rooms.
Unseatable judges
The seat picker lists the judges who can be seated first. Below them, in grey and marked unavailable, it lists each roster judge who lacks a step, with the step as the tag. A line under them reads that N judges are not available to seat until their steps are done, with the link Open Field > Judges. Search in the picker covers both lists.
| Tag | What the judge lacks |
|---|---|
| Withdrawn | The judge withdrew from the tournament. |
| Has not accepted | The judge has not accepted the place an admin made. |
| Needs compliance | The judge has not acknowledged the compliance policy. |
| Needs orientation | The judge has not completed orientation. |
| Awaiting approval | A tournament admin has not approved a judge who signed up. |
A judge who loses a step after being seated stays in the seat, and the check then blocks the release with a finding that names the step. Replacing the judge clears it.
In the picker, each seatable judge carries a tag. Free means seated nowhere else this round and no conflict with either entry. A conflict tag reads Conflict followed by the school or a competitor here. A judge seated elsewhere reads Seated in and the room, and a judge with no days recorded carries that note. Free judges sort first, then tagged judges, then conflicts.
Room assignment
Rooms come from the room list on Setup, described in Rooms. Only rooms marked available are offered. Prepare gives rooms to the new round's debates in the order of room names, and Generate pairings leaves every room blank. A room left blank blocks the release with No room assigned.
- In the inspector, the Room chips list every available room, with the count of free rooms beside the heading. A room taken by another pairing this round is disabled. With no rooms defined, the chip row is replaced by a text field with the placeholder Room.
- A room name is used by one pairing. Two unreleased pairings in one room produce a finding on every pairing but one, saying the room is also used by another pairing.
- A named room that is too small for the people in it is refused. The count is every speaker on both sides plus the judges seated. A room with no recorded capacity, or a name that matches no defined room, is accepted.
- Moving a released room notifies both entries and every judge in the room with an urgent notice naming the old and the new room.
The room inspector
The inspector opens beside the table for the selected room, or for a new pairing. Its title is the room name, with the room's status and a close button. On an online tournament a link Open link opens the room's meeting link in a new tab.
| Control | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Blocking or Advisory section | Lists the room's findings, each with a sentence. Under each, a Recommended fix with a reason, an Apply button, and a Choose someone else button, or Choose a room for a room finding. When no fix fits, the heading reads No free judge fits, No free room, Your call or Fix by hand. | Apply fills the form with the fix and saves it. |
| Competitors | Two rows, aff and neg, each with Change, or Choose when empty. Opens a searchable list marked Unpaired, or In and a room. | A room with a ballot in cannot change competitors or sides. |
| Swap sides | Exchanges the aff and neg entries in this room. | Hidden when a ballot is in. |
| Judge or Panel | One row per seat, named Judge, or Chair, Wing and Wing. Each has Choose or Replace, and Remove. The heading reads Panel and the number of seats for elimination. | Seats equal the panel size. A panel of one has one seat. |
| Auto-fill | Fills empty seats with free judges who have no conflict here. | Shown only while a seat is empty. |
| Room | Room chips, as described under Room assignment. | A new pairing starts on the first free room. |
| Reason for change | A required text box for a released room. Reads This room is public. Saving notifies both competitors and the judge or every judge on the panel, and is written to Records. The placeholder reads What changed and why. A missing reason shows Give a reason before saving. | Required only for a released room. |
| Create pairing, or Save and the room name | Saves the form. Findings run again on save. | Disabled when a chosen competitor already sits in another room. |
| Cancel | Closes the inspector without saving. | None. |
| Delete | Removes the pairing after a browser confirmation that names both entries. Both go back to unpaired. | Only for an unreleased room with no ballot. |
Under the buttons a line reads Released rooms need a typed reason. for a public room, and Unreleased: no reason needed. Findings re-run on save. otherwise. A competitor who already sits in another room of the round shows a notice naming that room, and the save button is disabled. The notice suggests moving them out of that room first. No control swaps two rooms in one step, so a competitor is freed from the other room by changing that room's entry, or by deleting that room while it is unreleased.
Saving a change to a room writes the old and new values to the room's edit history, and a released room also records the reason. A save that changes nothing returns No changes to save.
Round settings
Edit beside the round name opens the settings in the inspector. Reveal and spectating can change after release.
| Control | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Running late, minutes box | A whole number of minutes to move every remaining round by. The label reads Minutes to shift the remaining rounds by. | Default 15, in steps of 5, from 480 minutes earlier to 480 minutes later. A negative number brings the day forward. Zero is refused. |
| Shift what is left | Moves the start and the end of every round that has not started, has a window, and has no released room. | A round in progress, a completed round, a released round and a round with no window stay where they are. |
| Reveal to competitors | Full or Winner only. Full shows the winner and speaker points after each round. Winner only hides speaker points until the break. | Full is the default. |
| Spectating | Open or Closed. | A demo tournament refuses Open. |
| Window, Starts and Ends | The round's start and end, as date and time boxes in the tournament's zone. | Both are optional. The end must be later than the start. |
| Break size | Shown for an elimination round as Top N and the words set in Standings. Not editable here. | Read only. |
| Save settings | Saves reveal, spectating and the window. | None. |
| Cancel | Closes the settings. | None. |
A line under the buttons says the window and break size cannot change after release. The save itself does not check whether the round is released, so a window saved after release is stored. The round name is not editable on this screen.
The release check
The release check is a set of tests run over the round's rooms. In the product's own messages it is also called the disaster check. It runs when the page loads for every round in the left column, again after most edits on this screen, and again on the server at the moment Release is pressed. A finding is either blocking or a warning. Any blocking finding refuses the release, and no override exists.
| Finding | Severity | What triggers it |
|---|---|---|
| Same entry on both sides | Blocking | A room that is not a bye has one entry on both sides. |
| Entry in two rooms | Blocking | An entry appears in more than one room of the round. |
| Checked in and unpaired | Blocking | A competitor is currently checked in for the event and appears in no room. Preliminary rounds only, because an elimination round holds only the entries that broke. |
| Entry not in the tournament | Blocking | A room names an entry that is missing from the registrations. |
| Entry in another event | Blocking | An entry is registered for a different event than the round. |
| Partner absent | Blocking | An entry in a room is a two person team whose partner is marked absent at check-in. |
| Competitor not checked in | Warning | An entry in a room has no current check-in. A tournament that does not use check-in shows this on every room. |
| Judge double booked | Blocking | One judge, in a panel seat or as the chair, sits in two or more rooms of the round. |
| No judge | Blocking | A room that is not a bye has no judge and no active seat. |
| Panel short | Blocking | An unreleased elimination room has some judges but fewer than the panel size. |
| Withdrawn judge on a released room | Blocking | A judge who withdrew still sits on a posted room. |
| Judge not ready to seat | Blocking | A seated judge lacks a step, or is not on the roster. Decided rooms are skipped. |
| Judge from the same school | Blocking | A judge sits with an entry from the school they judge for, or a school they are declared against. |
| Declared entry conflict | Blocking | A judge sits with an entry they are declared against. |
| Household conflict | Blocking | A judge shares a household with a competitor or a fellow panel judge in the room. |
| Judge repeat | Warning, or Blocking | A judge has already judged one of the two entries in an earlier round. Blocking only when Setup's Never seat a judge with a team they have judged is on. |
| Judge over daily limit | Warning | A judge is seated in more rounds on one day than they said they can judge. |
| No room assigned | Blocking | An unreleased room has no room. |
| Room shared | Blocking | An unreleased room has the same room name as another room. One room keeps the name and the others are flagged. |
The console adds two advisories of its own. A judge with no available days recorded gets a note that they should be seated only if they said they can judge. A judge declared against a school, where the declaration was marked soft, gets a school conflict note. A soft declaration never blocks.
Findings that belong to no room, for example a checked in competitor left out of the draw, appear only in the release bar. Findings that belong to a room appear in the room's inspector and in the bar.
Recommended fixes
For a double booking, a school or household conflict, a judge who is not ready, a repeat, a short panel, an empty seat or a missing room, the console works out one fix and says why. A seat fix names the judge, the judge's years of experience, and that the judge is free this round with no conflict. A room fix names the first free room. Apply all N fixes computes each fix against the ones before it, so one free judge is never given to two rooms. A double booking is cleared by moving the judge out of every room but one, keeping the released room, or the first room in the draw.
A fix is offered for an unreleased room only, since a released room needs a typed reason. A daily limit finding has no recommended fix. A repeat has one only when a free judge has heard neither entry.
Releasing and un-releasing
The release bar runs along the bottom. Its dot and sentence say where the round stands, and its buttons act on the whole round.
| Control or text | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Status sentence | Reads Nothing to release yet, then Clear to release, or the count of rooms blocked and findings to clear, or the round name is fully released with ballots still waiting. | An advisory count is added when advisories are open. |
| Show | Filters the table to blocked rooms and opens the first one. | Shown when a room is blocked. |
| Released count | Reads N / M released, over rooms that need a ballot. | Byes are not counted. |
| Releases itself once the check passes | Reads this when Setup's automatic release is on and the check still holds the round. | Shown only with the switch on. |
| The check passes. Press Release, or the next Rounds save releases it. | Reads this when the switch is on, the check is clean and the round is still unreleased. | Shown only with the switch on. |
| Blocker list | One line per blocking finding, with the room and a link that clears it: Open the check-in desk, Add a pairing, Open and the room, or Open the round. | Scrolls when long. |
| Apply N recommended fixes | Applies every recommended fix in one save. | Shown while the check holds the round and a fix exists. |
| Un-release round or Un-release bracket | Takes the postings down after a confirmation. | Offered only while the action would take it. See below. |
| Release round or Release bracket | Asks for confirmation, then publishes. | Disabled when every room is released, a blocker exists, or the round has no rooms. |
The release confirmation reads Release and the round name, adds with N advisories open when there are any, and says that competitors and judges are notified now. It has the buttons Release and Cancel, and Escape cancels. A release writes every room's public flag in one save, then sends one in-app notice to each entry and one to each seated judge. The notice title is Pairings are out. A competitor's notice names their room, or says they have a bye. The banner afterward reads Round released. Pairings are now public. and, when notices were sent, the number sent and that a release sends no email.
Releasing again after a room was added tells only the entries and judges of the rooms that were still unreleased. Setup's switch Release rounds automatically when the check passes releases a round after a Rounds save, a Prepare, or a check-in desk change that clears the check, and never releases a round that has a blocker. The banner then reads The check passed, so the round released itself. Pairings are now public. The check runs after a pairing is created by hand, but the automatic release does not, so a round drawn by hand is not released by its first pairing.
Un-release
Un-release takes the postings down for competitors, judges and the public page and withdraws the notices the release and any room move sent. The draw, the judges, the rooms and any draft ballots stay, so a director can fix the cause and release again. The confirmation says so, and its button is Un-release.
The button is offered only while the action would be taken. It is refused when no room is released, when any ballot is submitted, when any room has a recorded result, and when the round has started. A ballot that arrives while the postings are coming down puts them back up and names the reason.
Online tournaments
On an online tournament, a room is the meeting link. Competitors set and change the link from their own room page, and it must start with https://. The console shows such a room as Online room and its number in Setup's room list, and the inspector's Open link opens it. A link that is not in the list reads Online room.
Each room page on an online tournament also carries Round Chat and an evidence exchange. Chat is open to the two sides, the judges seated in the room and tournament staff, up to 2,000 characters a message. After the round is over, its chat is kept as a record and accepts no new messages. An in-person room has neither. The room page offers the report types The meeting failed and The room or link is broken only on an online tournament.
The code keeps spectating closed on demo tournaments, because an open round shows its meeting links to any signed-in account.
Preparing the next round
The Next round panel appears on the empty first screen and at ?view=prepare. It lists each event, scoped to one event when the address names it, and hides itself for a completed or cancelled tournament. For each event it says what to do next, in one sentence.
| Control or text | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Judges per room | The number of judges to seat in every new room. | Required, 1 to 9. Defaults to Setup's judges per preliminary room, or to the bracket's panel size from Setup. |
| I approve the proposed break above. | A checkbox that must be ticked to prepare the first elimination round. | Shown only at the break step, with the proposed break listed as numbered seeds. |
| Prepare next round | Draws the round, seats judges, gives rooms and saves it unreleased. | The label becomes Approve break and prepare round at the break, and Prepare next elimination round after an elimination round. It reads Preparing round... while it works. |
| Link in place of the form | A link takes over when the step is not prepared here: Open Rounds & break when the number of preliminary rounds is unset, Review and release, Review outstanding ballots, or Review standings. | None. |
| Every event's next round | Returns from one event to all events. | Shown when the panel is scoped to one event. |
| Back to the rounds console | Returns to the console. | None. |
A tournament with the By hand draw opens the new preliminary round empty. A prepared round saves nothing unless every room gets a full panel, so a shortage of judges refuses the whole round. The line under the form reads Pairings and assignments stay private until you review and release the round. After a successful preparation the console opens on the new round, and the automatic release runs its check.
Requests from rooms
Under the table of rooms, the console lists what participants and staff have raised. The section is hidden when there is nothing to show.
