Disputes

How a competitor questions a recorded result, how the tab desk claims and rules on it, what each outcome records, and what a ruling does not change.

A dispute is a private note in which a competitor asks the tab desk to review the recorded result of one room. The Disputes view of the Ballots screen is where the desk reads each note, compares it with the result on record, claims it so that nobody else rules on it, and records a ruling. It is the Disputes subview under Ballots in the left rail, at /tournaments/{id}/admin/ballots?view=disputes. The older address /admin/disputes opens the same view. The Queue view of Ballots also lists Disputes under the heading Review, with the number of disputes still open.

A ruling is a record of a decision. It does not change a ballot, a result or standings. A result is changed on the Queue view of Ballots, where the desk can enter a correction with a reason. The two steps are separate, so a dispute ruled corrected leaves the old result in place until a correction is saved there.

Who can use it

RoleWhat it can do with disputes
CompetitorFiles one dispute for a room they debated in, after the room is released and decided, and reads the status and the ruling note on their own room page. A competitor does not see the other side's dispute.
Platform adminReads every dispute, claims, puts back and rules, for any tournament.
Organization owner or adminThe same, for every tournament the organization hosts.
Tournament admin seatThe same.
Tab seatThe same. A tab seat works disputes exactly as an admin seat does.
Compliance seatCannot open the view. The claim and the ruling both refuse the seat.
Coach, judge, observerCannot file or read disputes. Only a competitor in the room can file.

No notice goes out when a dispute is filed or ruled on. The desk learns of a new dispute from the count beside Disputes in the Ballots rail, from the next step list on the Overview, and from the list in this view. A competitor learns of a ruling by opening their room page.

How a competitor files

On the competitor's room page, a tile titled Question this result appears once the room is released and has a recorded result. It explains that the note is private to the competitor and tournament staff.

ControlWhat it doesDefault or limit
What should the tab desk review? The text of the concern. The placeholder reads Describe the specific result issue.Required, 1 to 2,000 characters.
Submit private disputeFiles the dispute. The page then says Your private dispute was sent to the tab desk. One dispute for each room. After one exists, the form is replaced by its status.

While a dispute is open or claimed, the tile reads Your dispute is with the tab desk. When a desk member has claimed it, a second line reads Someone at the tab desk is working on it now. After a ruling, the tile shows Dispute followed by the status, the competitor's text and the desk's note.

Statuses and outcomes

Upheld original resultThe desk reviewed the concern and the recorded result stands. The comparison reads Original submission upheld, and the standings line reads No standings change.

What a ruling changes

  • The dispute. Its status, outcome, note, the person who ruled and the time are saved, and the competitor sees the status and note on their room page.
  • Records. A claim and a put back are each written to Records. A ruling is written with the note as its reason.
  • Counts. The open count in the Ballots rail, the next step list on the Overview and the list of things to settle before Finalize all drop by one.
  • Not the ballot. The result, the ballots, the room's status and the standings are untouched. A correction is made on the Queue, where the save needs a reason and runs the release check again.
  • Not the competitor's notices. No in-app notice or email reports the ruling.
