Creating a tournament
The create form, its eight presets, every field with its limits, and exactly what a new tournament starts with.
Creating a tournament files a new tournament under an organization, writes its first event and a starting set of tab and ballot rules, and opens its Overview. The form is a single page, not a stepped wizard. It is offered in two places that post the same fields to the same action: the page at /tournaments/new, which the tournament admin index and the organization list link to, and the Create tournament pane inside an organization's own console, which adds a live preview of the public page. A preset is a starting choice of format, venue and pacing that fills several fields at once and seeds the tab rules. Nothing is written until Create tournament is selected.
Who can use it
| Role | What it can do on this screen |
|---|---|
| Platform admin | Opens the form with every organization in the picker and can file a tournament under any of them. No organization is preselected unless the link names one. |
| Organization owner or admin | Creates tournaments under the organizations where the account holds the owner or admin role. The picker lists only those organizations. |
| Organization member with the Settings only role | The organization appears in the picker, but the database refuses the creation. The form then shows the general failure message listed under Troubleshooting. That role does not open the tournament consoles. |
| Tournament admin seat, tab seat, compliance seat | No access by seat alone. A tournament seat belongs to one existing tournament, so it does not allow creating another. |
| Coach, competitor, judge, observer, signed-out visitor | None. A signed-out visitor is sent to sign in and returns to the form afterward. |
An account that administers no organization sees the heading You need to administer an organization first, the line Tournaments are created under an organization, and a link Create an organization →, which opens organization creation. Creating an organization makes its creator the owner at once. See Organization and account.
Before the form opens
- Setup steps first. If the organization has not finished its onboarding steps, the page sends the visitor to the organization's onboarding wizard instead of showing the form. The check applies to the organization named in the link, or to the only organization the account administers. With several organizations and no organization named in the link, no check runs at this point.
- Which organization is preselected. A link that names an organization the account administers selects it. Otherwise an account with exactly one organization has it selected. An account with several organizations must choose one, and Create tournament stays disabled until a choice is made.
- Organization picker. Shown only when the account administers more than one organization. With one, the organization is filled in silently.
The form
The page at /tournaments/new is titled Create a tournament, with the line that the creator can manage the tournament immediately as an admin of its organization. Fields run in the order below. A field marked required must be filled before Create tournament enables.
| Control | What it does | Default or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Starting preset | Fills Format, the first event, Venue format and Pacing from one of eight presets and seeds the tab rules. The hint reads: Seeds a valid tab baseline. Every value stays editable after creation. | Choose a preset or configure manually |
| Pacing | How rounds are scheduled. Two options: Live paced: fixed round schedule, and Long form: flexible round scheduling. Long form turns on the options for debaters to request judges and propose round times. Live paced leaves both off. | Live paced; a preset sets it |
| Who may register | Open registration or Invite only. Invite-only tournaments require an admin-issued claim code before a participant can register. | Open registration |
| Organization | The organization that owns the tournament. A disabled placeholder reads Select an organization. | Shown only with more than one organization |
| Tournament name | The name shown on the public page, pairings and every ballot. Required. Placeholder: Fall Invitational 2026. | 1 to 200 characters after trimming spaces |
| Format | A free text description of the debate format, such as Policy Debate, Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas or Parliamentary. Required. A preset fills it. | 1 to 100 characters |
| Location | Free text. Required. Placeholder: Dallas, TX. Typing Online here does not make the tournament online; Venue format decides that. | 1 to 200 characters |
| Venue format | A choice of In-person: Rounds happen at a physical venue, or Online: Rounds happen over video. Rooms hold meeting links. A preset sets it. | In-person |
| Start date | The first day. Required. | A calendar date |
| End date | The last day. Required. Must not be earlier than the start date. | A calendar date |
| Time zone | The zone every posted time shows in. Grouped by region, with every zone the server knows. The hint reads: Defaults to this browser's time zone when it is available. | The browser's zone when listed, else America/New_York |
| Description | Optional text shown on the tournament's public page. Labelled Description optional on this page. | Up to 4000 characters |
| Max participants | The most entries the tournament takes, counted across every event. Setup calls this field Maximum entries. | 100; a whole number from 1 to 100000 |
| Registration fee, in US dollars | The fee per entry. Zero disables payment. | 30; zero or more, in steps of one cent |
| Divisions | One event, or Novice and Varsity. Enabled only after a preset is chosen. With Novice and Varsity, the preset supplies two events instead of one. | One event |
| Event name | The first event's name. Required. Placeholder: Lincoln-Douglas. A preset fills it. Under a split, this is the Varsity event. | 1 to 200 characters |
| Short code | The first event's short code, used in pairings and postings. Required. Always converted to upper case as typed. Placeholder: LD. | 1 to 20 characters |
| Second event name | The Novice event's name. Appears only with Novice and Varsity. Placeholder: Novice Lincoln-Douglas. | 1 to 200 characters |
| Second short code | The Novice event's short code. Appears only with Novice and Varsity. Placeholder: NLD. Must differ from the first short code. | 1 to 20 characters |
| Create tournament | Submits the form. Reads Creating… while the request runs. | Disabled until every required field is valid |
The first event section is headed First event, or Events once a split is chosen. The line under it reads: Registration and scoring are organized by event, and every tournament needs at least one. Add more from Setup later.
The organization console pane
Inside an organization's console, the Create tournament pane holds the same fields grouped under the headers Identity, Rounds, Venue & dates, Entry, First event or Events, and Public page. It posts to the same action, so every limit above applies. It differs in these ways.
| Difference | What the pane does |
|---|---|
| Organization | Always the organization whose console it is in. There is no picker. |
| Starting preset | The first option reads Configure manually. The hint reads: Seeds format, first event and venue. Nothing is locked. |
| Starting format | If the organization's setup wizard saved a starting format, the pane opens with Format and the first event already filled for it. The preset, which also decides venue and pacing, is still chosen by hand. |
| Online presets | Choosing an online preset also fills Location with Online. |
| Entry cap | Named Entry cap in this pane, with the hint: Registration closes automatically at the cap. The same value is Max participants on the page and Maximum entries in Setup. |
| Who may register | Two buttons, Open and Invite only, in place of a select. The hint reads: Invite-only tournaments accept entries by claim code. |
| Tournament name hint | Shown on the public page, pairings and every ballot. |
| Description hint | Shown on the tournament's public page. Left blank, the page opens on the date line. |
| Status line | The foot of the pane reads Draft · nothing written yet, and Draft · not written until you create after a first submit attempt. |
| Cancel | Closes the pane. When anything has been typed or picked, it first asks: Discard this tournament draft? Nothing has been created. |
| Live preview | Beside the form from wide screens, and below it on narrow ones, a panel headed Public page · live preview shows the name, date line, location, format chips, description, Entry cap, Fee and Events count as they are typed. The note under it says this is what a competitor sees the moment registration opens, and that branding is inherited from the league. |
Presets
There are eight presets: four formats, each in person or online. A preset label reads In-person or Online followed by the format name.
| Format | Event name and short code | Entries per team | Ballot | Pacing when in person | Pacing when online |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Team Policy | Team Policy, TP | 2 | Judge-assigned rank | Live paced | Long form |
| Lincoln-Douglas | Lincoln-Douglas, LD | 1 | Judge-assigned rank | Live paced | Long form |
| Moot Court | Moot Court, MOOT | 1 | Points-derived rank | Live paced | Live paced |
| Parliamentary | Parliamentary, PARLI | 2 | Points-derived rank | Live paced | Live paced |
A points-derived ballot scores each speaker in four categories, each from 4 to 8 points: Content, Delivery, Organization and Responsiveness, and the ranks follow from the totals. A judge-assigned rank ballot has the judge rank the speakers directly. See Ballots.
With Divisions set to Novice and Varsity, a preset supplies two events. The first is Varsity, named Varsity followed by the format and coded V followed by the format code, for example Varsity Team Policy, VTP. The second is Novice, for example Novice Team Policy, NTP. Both follow the tournament wide rules until Setup gives one its own. Choosing another preset after a split refills both events. Choosing Configure manually clears the split.
Choosing a preset changes Format, the event fields, Venue format and Pacing in the form. Each remains editable before submitting. A manual creation starts with every field empty or at its default, and its first event takes one entry per competitor.
What a new tournament starts with
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Owner | The chosen organization. The creator is not added as a separate tournament admin; access comes from the organization role. |
| Visibility | Private. Anyone holding the link can open the page. The directory lists it only to platform admins and to admins of its organization. Setup changes this. |
| Status | Planning Phase. Registration is closed. Opening it is a deliberate step in Setup. |
| Who may register | As chosen on the form. |
| Mode and pacing | The Venue format and Pacing chosen. Live paced leaves the judge request and round time proposal options off. Long form turns both on. |
| Time zone | As chosen. |
| First event | The name and short code entered, with one entry per competitor unless a preset says teams of two. |
| Second event | Only with Novice and Varsity. Active, listed after the first, with the preset's entries per team. |
| Preliminary rounds | 6, or the preset's count. Every preset uses 6. |
| Tiebreakers | Wins, speaks, adjusted speaks, opponent wins, head to head, coin flip, in that order. |
| Dropped scores | The highest and lowest speaker points are dropped once, and the highest and lowest ranks once. |
| Speaker points | 20 to 30. |
| Rank scale | 4. |
| Break | To 8. |
| Ballot | Judge-assigned rank with a rank scale of 4, or a preset's points-derived ballot with its four categories. A preset also records its key on the tournament. A manual creation records none. |
| Moot Court format | A Moot Court preset sets the first event's format to the platform's Moot Court format when one exists, which the clerk desk depends on. |
These tab rules and the ballot are written at the tournament level. With a split, neither event has its own copy, so both follow the tournament level rules until Setup gives one its own.
After Create tournament
The browser opens the new tournament's Overview at /tournaments/<id>/admin?created=1. A banner at the top reads Tournament created, followed by a sentence saying that everything entered can be changed in Setup, with Setup as a link. Overview then lists the next steps in four phases: prepare, preliminaries, eliminations and wrap-up. See Overview.
If the second event could not be added, the browser instead opens Setup at the Events section with a message naming the event and saying the tournament was created with its first event only. The form is not shown again, since submitting it a second time would create a second tournament.
Tasks
Create a tournament from a preset.
- Open the organization's console and select Create tournament, or open
/tournaments/new. - Choose a Starting preset, for example In-person Lincoln-Douglas.
- Set Divisions to Novice and Varsity if the tournament runs both. Check the two event names and short codes.
- Enter Tournament name and Location. Enter Start date and End date. Check Time zone.
- Check Max participants, Registration fee and Who may register.
- Add a Description if the public page should open on text.
- Select Create tournament.
The Overview opens with the Tournament created banner. Registration is closed and the tournament is private until Setup changes them.
Create a tournament without a preset.
- Leave Starting preset on its first option.
- Enter Format, and choose Venue format and Pacing.
- Enter the first event's Event name and Short code.
- Fill the remaining fields as above and select Create tournament.
The tournament starts with the default tab rules listed above and a judge-assigned rank ballot. Add more events and adjust the ballot in Setup.

Limits and notes
- There is no way to cancel, archive or delete a tournament from the product today. The name is read only in Setup, so check it before creating.
- Hybrid pacing exists in the database but is not offered here or in Setup.
- The organization onboarding check runs only when the page can tell which organization is meant.
- The tournament starts in Planning Phase with registration closed, whatever Who may register says. That field decides who may register once registration opens.
