Awards and announcing

The Awards and Announcing tabs: how speaker awards are ranked and saved, what the announcing stage shows, and when awards become public.

Awards and Announcing are the last two of the four tabs under Standings in the left rail. Awards ranks the tournament's speakers by their speaker points and saves how many places are awarded. Announcing is a full screen stage for the awards ceremony that reveals those places one at a time. Both open at /tournaments/[id]/admin/standings, with the view setting awards or announcing. The older address /admin/awards sends a director to the Awards tab. Use Awards once the last ballot is in, and use Announcing in the room where the ceremony is held. Standings and the break are in Standings and Breaks and elimination rounds.

How speakers are ranked

A speaker award goes to the entries with the most speaker points. The list is computed again each time the tab opens. The computation follows these rules.

  • Only pairings that are completed count. A pairing without a recorded decision adds nothing.
  • Each side of a pairing contributes the speaker points recorded for it on the ballot. Elimination rounds count when they are completed.
  • A bye adds nothing to either side, and a side with no recorded points adds nothing.
  • Each entry is one row. The row is named for the entry's first competitor, with the entry's team name beside it, and an entry of two debaters is therefore one row, not two.
  • Rows are ordered by total speaker points, highest first, and the place is the row's position in that order. Two rows with equal totals take consecutive places in the order the data happens to arrive, and no tiebreak is applied.
  • The Awards tab ranks across every event of the tournament together. The public page ranks each event on its own.
  • The list is cut to the top 10 on the Awards tab. The depth chosen there trims the list further.
  • A school is read from the club answer given at registration, and reads Independent when none was given.

The ranking uses total points and does not drop any scores, whatever the Adjusted speaker points drop setting is. The average column is shown for information and is not what orders the rows, so an entry that has debated more rounds, such as one that went deep into the elimination rounds, can outrank an entry with a higher average.

Awards tab

The tab is a console with a header, an optional list of award sections on the left, the computed list in the middle, and a panel for the selected award on the right. The list of sections shows from the xl screen width up, and the selected award panel stacks under the list on narrower screens.

FooterTwo lines. The first reads Saving builds the announcing script and certificate set. The second says who can see the awards, and is described below.See Known mismatches.

The footer's second line reads Nothing is public until the tournament is finalized in Records while the tournament is not completed. Once the tournament is completed it reads that the awards are public, that they stay editable, and that a change saved shows publicly at once.

Announcing tab

Announcing is a presenter view for the ceremony. It fills the screen with a colored background and shows one placement at a time. It holds no settings and saves nothing. It reads the same top speakers as the Awards tab, cut to the saved depth, and falls back to Top 3 when the depth is Off or unset.

The stage starts on place 1 and moves down to the lower places. It does not count down from the last place, so a ceremony that announces from the lowest place up reads the list from the end using Back, after moving to the last placement.

The stage does not send anything, post anything publicly or record that a name was read. The position is held only in the open page and starts again at place 1 when the page is reloaded.

Tasks

Save how many speaker places are awarded.

  1. Open Standings in the left rail. Select the Awards tab.
  2. Check the computed list against the standings and the ballots.
  3. Select Top 3, Top 5 or Top 10 under Depth.
  4. Select Save awards.

The tab reloads with the notice Saved · logged to Records, and the choice is added to the tournament's audit trail with the old and the new depth. The same setting can be changed in Setup, in the Standings section under Awards, where it can also be switched off.

Run the ceremony.

  1. Save the depth on the Awards tab.
  2. Open Standings and select the Announcing tab on the screen shown to the room.
  3. Select Reveal next to move from place 1 to each lower place.
  4. Select Back to return to an earlier place.

The stage shows the name, the school and the citation for the place on screen.

Switch speaker awards off.

  1. Open Setup. Select the Standings section.
  2. Under Awards, select Off and save the section.

The public page then shows no speaker awards. The Awards and Announcing tabs still work and use Top 3.

When awards are public

Nothing on the Awards or Announcing tabs publishes anything. Speaker awards appear on the public tournament page only when all of the following hold.

  • The tournament is Completed, which happens when it is finalized in Records. See Results and closeout.
  • A depth is saved, so the setting is not Off.
  • Standings are public by the Publish standings rule, no round is live, and no round uses the winner only reveal mode, so speaker points may be shown.
  • The tournament does not mask participant names on its postings.
  • At least one event is shown, since a hidden event has no awards.

The public page ranks each event separately, by total speaker points, to the saved depth, and labels each list with the event name when the tournament has several events. Awards stay editable after the tournament is completed, so a depth saved later changes the public page at once. The closeout packet has an Awards sheet that lists the same speaker places at the saved depth, using Top 3 when the depth is Off.

Known mismatches

  • Setup says speaker awards are ranked by adjusted speaker points, then by the tiebreak order. The Awards tab, the Announcing stage, the public page and the closeout packet all rank by total speaker points with no drop and no tiebreak.
  • The footer says that saving builds the announcing script and certificate set, and a line in the selected award panel says the selected value is carried into the announcing script. Saving writes only the depth. The Announcing stage reads the live ranking and nothing is carried over from a selected row.
  • The left column lists Team awards, Special recognition and Certificate set as sections, and a note says every override records the computed value beside the chosen one. These rows do nothing, and no override exists.
  • Print certificates prints the console page. No certificate layout exists.
  • The Awards tab ranks all events together, while the public page ranks each event separately.
  • The Awards tab shows the average to two decimals and orders by total, so row order can disagree with the averages shown.
