PHILOSOPHY · 03
SIX TENETS
What we believe debate is for.
Meridian's conviction about what debate is for. This is the soul; everything ladders up to it.
P-01
Debate is genuine inquiry.
Not indoctrination. Not competitive strategy. Its value is the rare chance to think hard, play with ideas, and seriously reckon with the possibility that the other side is right. You cannot manufacture thinkers by enforcing conclusions. What forms them is the freedom to inquire.
P-02
Formation through contest.
Debate works because it is a contest, win-or-lose in a single afternoon. That pressure channels the strongest youthful impulses, curiosity and rebellion, into reasoning, courage, and clarity. The competition is the engine; formation is the product. Never invert that.
P-03
Trust in the reasoner.
Arguing both sides, and being willing to actually change your mind, is the point. Meridian trusts that people given facts and freedom reason their way toward sound judgment. Confidence in the individual, not control over them.
P-04
Advancing civic education globally.
The deepest stake. Debate rehearses the hardest civic skill there is: handling profound disagreement without coercion. The alternative is a world that settles disagreement through demagogy, violence, populism, and at the extreme, atrocity. Meridian exists to spread this skill widely.
P-05
Clarity over speed; substance over performance.
Reward speakers who are slow, clear, and define their terms. Who can persuade an intelligent non-specialist. Reject the competitive circuit's fast-talk, spreading, and insider-technique culture. The standard is a thoughtful citizen with common sense and civility.
P-06
Quality over scale; non-partisan always.
Protect the depth and integrity of formation over raw reach. Keep debate out of party politics. Bent toward a campaign, debate loses its power. Reach without rigor is failure, not success.

[PLACEHOLDER] Reach without rigour is failure.
[PLACEHOLDER · Q-post-meridiem] The standing constraint. We scale on the conditions that protect formation. Anything else is the wrong success.
